In August 2016, I attended the Younique Convention in St. Louis. One of the breakout classes was taught by two Black Status presenters who specifically discussed why we do what we do, and how that can affect our business.

This class taught me there are two emotions that drive us to take action. These two emotions are Fear and Love.

Fear

As a sufferer of Anxiety, I feel a large portion of my daily choices have been fuelled by fear.

  • I wake up early because I’m afraid of being late for the school run.

  • I wash my hands when I’ve been out because I’m afraid of catching a bug and being unable to care for the kids.

  • I try to keep the house clean and tidy because I’m afraid someone might come over unexpectedly

Fear is a useful emotion. It keeps us safe from harm and can ensure that boring, monotonous tasks are completed (like seriously, who would want to clean a bathroom every day if there were no consequences when they don’t?)

Love

What do we do out of love? This is a much more interesting question to explore. When I think about love, my family immediately spring to mind. And it is so much easier to see what they do for me out of love than for me to think about what I do for them.

  • Ross strokes my back while we watch TV to keep me calm

  • Alex makes me pictures of hearts and cards

  • Ryan gives me hugs

  • Nicholas follows me around the house and wants to come with me when I go shopping

  • My parents call me on the phone and give me counsel when I need it

  • My sister’s buy me gifts

  • My brother asks me how I’m doing and takes interest in my business

I know, without any doubt that these are done out of Love, not fear. I know my family love me and I feel that love when they do these small and simple things.

The beautiful thing is, we can actually shift our thinking and start doing some of the same things we do out of fear and do them out of love.

For example:

  • I wake up early, not because I’m afraid of being late for the school run. But because I don’t want my children to be put in the “late book” and start the day off in trouble (Like I did, so many times as a child) Because I love them and want them to be happy.

  • I wash my hands frequently because I want to keep myself healthy and able to care for my children. Because I love them.

  • I try to keep the house clean and tidy, because it feels more calm and serene and I want my family to have a refuge from the world, where they feel safe and loved. Because I love them.

When I think about doing those things out of fear, there is a kind of inner battle in my mind. I don’t WANT to do these things…but I HAVE to otherwise something BAD will happen. I feel resentment, instead of determination. And when it’s done I just feel relieved that it’s over.

Yet, when I turn to a place of love and allow that emotion to fuel my actions, I feel a sense of determination and persistence. When the tasks are complete, not only do I feel happy but my confidence and self-esteem grows too.

Love is a deeper, more powerful emotion than fear. If we do what we do out of love, we are propelled forward in a positive light. This enables us to achieve more, complete our tasks with more speed and desire to do more than is required.

So how can this help our business? Well, if we go back to Fear, What do you do (or not do) out of fear to help your business?

  • I wont do an online party because I’m afraid no one will engage with my posts or buy anything

  • I wont talk to anyone about the opportunity because I’m afraid they will get upset with me and think I’m just trying to get them to join my team

  • I wont post about the mascara because I’m afraid people will think I just want to sell it

  • I wont mention Younique when I’m out and about because I’m afraid that people will think Younique is all I ever talk about.

These are common concerns that I hear from Presenters within the team. They are fears that I have also experienced – and still do, from time to time. How do you feel when you read those statements? Were you a nodding dog like Churchill? Did you perhaps even read those and think “Oh wow, I never thought of that, good point”?

How do you see your business building if you do not party, sponsor or sell – or even TALK about Younique? So, are these statements serving your goals? Are they serving you? The answer is no.

Let’s look at those statements again and this time, turn them around as if our driving force behind them was love.

  • I want to do an online party because I want to educate, entertain and make new friends because I love Younique products and the company and I want to show everyone how great it is!

  • I have to share the opportunity and tell others what a goldmine I’ve found. I can’t wait to help other people discover how Younique can benefit their lives too.

  • I wear this mascara and love it, I have to share it with others, so I’m going to post about it and shout it out from the rooftops! My lashes are huge!

  • Younique can’t be kept in the dark! I’m proud of the company I’m part of and I love the mission to Uplift, Empower and Validate women. I feel so lucky to be able to tell people about that.

These statements create a more positive energy inside. Reading through them even stirs up excitement in me and I can’t wait to get started! See how powerful love is compared to fear?

What if you don’t love the products? What if you don’t know much about the company or the compensation plan? What if you don’t really know how Younique has helped you or how it could help others? How can you do these things out of love…when you don’t feel love?

On Youtube there are countless videos that will serve this purpose. To find out the history of Younique, look up “Derek’s Story, Younique” or listen to the convention speakers from 2013/14. Read about the Younique foundation. Play with the make up. Get to know the products. Trust me, if you take the time to study the company you have just joined, you will soon fall in love and realize, this isnt’ just any Network Marketing company. We don’t just flog mascaras on social media. This is a mission-first business. To Uplift, Empower and Validate women around the world by providing a retreat for victims of Sexual Abuse in childhood and a business opportunities for women to find financial independence while raising a family at home.

I promise you, that if you take the time to change your thought processes from fear-led to being fuelled by love, your working life will be so much more fulfilling. People sense how you feel. They know when you’re posting just for the sake of it. They know when you are messaging just to get a quick sale.

This is why I decided to take this topic to you first. Because WHY you do this business will be the foundation of your whole career.

May we take a moment each day, to feel gratitude for the business we have and the opportunity to share what we have so that other women will be uplifted, empowered and validated as well.
